Student Mobility makes studying abroad as easy as possible.

Studying and living abroad is a defining experience for many students. Student Mobility would like to contribute by removing the practical obstacles that you might come across.
Student Mobility / About us
Why we do what we do.
The program Student Mobility was launched in 2016 as part of the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) in the Netherlands. Due to the legacy of ISIC, close connections had been established with many International Offices at Higher Educational Insitutions (HEIs). At the time, ISIC focused on outgoing Dutch students, but the growing rate of incoming international student (approximately 10% a year) altered the tasks and responsibilites of HEIs.

To understand how the educational system and their students were dealing with this exponential increase, we joined the steering-group “Red-carpet” and the network “Mobstacles”, which are both initiatives belonging to Nuffic, the Dutch organisation for internationalisation in education.

Attending events and discussions opened our eyes to the obstacles and challenges that both international students and HEIs face at the hands of increasing student mobility. The first hurdle we wanted to tackle was access to public transport: Together with Nuffic “Study in Holland”, we launched the ISIC Mobility Card, a discounted OV product for international students who are not eligible for the “Studentenreisrecht” product.

As the Mobility Project proved to be a very necessary and popular product among international students, we decided, in 2021, to establish Student Mobility as its own independent organisation that will focus on developing public-private services and products for international incoming students.

The ISIC Association

The ISIC Association is the non-profit organisation behind the International Student Identity Card (ISIC), which is the only internationally accepted proof of bona fide student status.

First established in 1953, the ISIC card is now issued to students in over 130 countries. Rather than being exclusive, all bona fide students over the age of 12, regardless of their nationality, race gender or religion, can purchase an ISIC card at an affordable price. Using one single card, ISIC students gain preferential and discounted access to products, services and experiences that are relevant to all aspects of student life, from software licenses and cinema access to bookstores, public transport, cafés and eateries.

By offering this wide range of opportunities to cardholders, the ISIC Association aims to play a supporting role in improving intercultural understanding and educational opportunities, as well as facilitating student life across the world. Due to this, the ISIC card has been endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 1968.

The ISIC card is managed at a global level by the ISIC Global Office B.V., based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. More information about the ISIC card can be found here.
