How to get around the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, most students choose to travel by public transport and bike. Student Mobility, in cooperation with ISIC, provides solutions for both.
Student Mobility Card
Dutch trains, trams, metros and buses all use the same payment system: the OV-chipkaart. Getting a card and choosing a suitable subscription is a complicated process, especially for international students. That is why Student Mobility created the Student Mobility Card, a custom-made public transport card which offers discounts to international students.
Student discount
What would student life be without a few discounts? The Student Mobility Card grants you a 15% discount during weekends and weekday off-peak hours on all trains of the Dutch Railways, or Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). Not only will you receive a travel card but also a digital ISIC student ID. This 12 month membership will be your ticket to the biggest network of global student benefits in the world.
Customised application with international payment methods
Since you are new to the Netherlands and probably don’t speak Dutch nor have a Dutch bank account yet, we made a customised application process for international students that allows you to opt for an international payment method.
If anything else is unclear, you can find step-by-step instructions on how to travel in the Netherlands on our website. Our English-speaking customer service would also be happy to answer your questions!

For occasional train travel, buying individual tickets makes sense. However, these will cost the same price regardless of whether you're traveling during peak or off-peak hours. To overcome this, we will soon be offering train vouchers. This will grant students a 40% discount when buying an NS train ticket. If you sign up for our products, you'll be kept up to date with any future opportunities to save!
NS TRAIN TICKETS
Due to its size, the Netherlands has an excellent train network. Hopping on trains to commute or visit a new city is easy to get the hang of. Throughout the country, the principal passenger railway operator is NS - short for Nederlandse Spoorwegen. They offer three types of trains, namely the Sprinter, Intercity, and Intercity Direct.

Train travel is split into peak and off-peak hours. Peak hours are from Monday to Friday between 6:30 and 9:00 am, and again from 4:00 to 6:30 pm. Off-peak hours are between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, as well as before 6:30 am and again after 6:30 pm. On weekends and holidays, off-peak hours apply all day.

Train tickets can be purchased online or via the yellow NS ticket machines available at all train stations. However, most people in the Netherlands travel with a mobility card, or so-called OV-Chipkaart. With these, travelers can take trains with ease, either by charging money onto the card manually or via a travel subscription. For international students, we've come up with the Student Mobility Card. This offers special discounted fares for train travel and international payment options.

Frequently Asked Questions

BIKE PROGRAM
STUDENT MOBILITY CARD
Why should I lease a bike rather than buy one?
You may feel that owning your own bike makes the most sense for you. However, the reality of being a bike owner in the Netherlands includes frequent theft and potential damages. Leasing instead can give you peace of mind.

For a fixed monthly fee, you’ll always have a working bike – if something breaks, you can get it replaced. Even if your bike is stolen (and you still have the key), you’ll be able to get another one at a much lower fee than it would cost to buy an entirely new bike.
How do I get a bike?
If you’d like to get a bike via Student Mobility, you have several options. Both buying and leasing is possible. We’ve partnered with trustworthy companies to ensure that you can have easy access to a bike that always works. You can check the availabilities under our mobility package on our website.
How do I return my bike?
We’ll give you a choice of several dates at the end of the semester on which you will be able to return your bike to us. Keep an eye on your emails, as we’ll let you know when this will be with plenty of time in advance.

In case you have any other questions, or would like to give your bike back earlier, you can contact us at bikes@studentmobility.nl.
My bike is broken. What now?
If your bike is broken we’ll arrange a remote swap, either at your university campus or at a Swapfiets store. Contact us at bikes@studentmobility.nl and we’ll tell you the next steps.
What is the Student Mobility Card?
Simply put: it’s a contactless transportation card that allows you to pay as you go on all public transport throughout the Netherlands. After you grab your card, link it to your preferred payment method and the Netherlands is yours to explore.
How do I hop from different modes of transportation with my Student Mobility Card?
A good rule of thumb to follow is that, if you’re traveling on most public transportation, you’ll have to check in and out of each individual vehicle. So, if you’re switching from a bus to a tram, you’ll check in and out of the bus before checking in and out of the tram.

This is also the case if you’re transferring between the same mode of transport. Check in and out of one tram before checking in and out of another. The exception are NS trains and metros. Here, you check in once at the beginning of your journey and out again at the end. You’re free to transfer between several inbetween without worrying.
On which modes of transportation can I travel with my Student Mobility Card?
Everything is fair game. You can travel on all Dutch trains, trams, metros, busses and ferries. If you’re ever looking for a short-term bike solution, it’s also possible to rent an OV-bike with your card.
I just arrived in the Netherlands. How can I get my Student Mobility Card?
It’s up to you. You can either pick up your card at the introduction days of your university or choose to have it sent directly to your Dutch address for a fee of 2.5 euros. The choice is yours.
