What trips can I take?

Here are some of the routes you could take this summer:

  • One Country Pass: Best of Italy - Rome, Florence, Venice and Verona (one week)
  • Global Pass: Europe's cheapest cities – Warsaw, Kraków, Český Krumlov, Bratislava, Budapest, Zagreb, Belgrade, Sarajevo, Sofia, Bucharest (two-three weeks)
  • Global Pass: Discover the Mediterranean - Valencia, Barcelona, Montpellier, Marseille, Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo, Savona, Genoa, Pisa, Livorno, Rome (16+ days)
  • Global Pass: Instagrammable cities - Paris, Strasbourg, Konstanz, Zurich, Tirano, Milan, Geneva

Of course, the beauty of Interrail is that where you’d like to go is entirely up to you. Use the above routes for inspiration or ignore them completely if you have other destinations in mind, such as those off the beaten path, for example. You could also mix and match depending on which city is a non-negotiable.

What should I bring?

It’s also good to have a short overview of the things you should never forget on your Interrail trip. Make sure you have the following on hand:

  • Your ISIC student card that will get you nice discounts at restaurants or sights along the way
  • Large backpack that carries everything you need when traveling between cities
  • Small backpack for day trips
  • Bag separators or spare tote bags to ensure you don’t have to mix clean and dirty clothes
  • Sports clothes for long walks or hikes
  • Every day, simple clothing that is easy to wash on the go
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Flipflops for hostel showers
  • Plug adaptors to make sure you can charge your phone everywhere
  • Portable charger so that your phone never dies when you need it most
  • Passport or ID (duh)
  • Interrail pass (duh, again)
  • Travel insurance might be handy to buy in advance
  • (Digital) travel card, such as a Revolut (which you should consider making your main Dutch card anyhow - more here) that you can keep topping up along the way
  • Cash, for times when paying with a card is not possible

How can I stay safe?

Chances are, if you’ve made it this far you’ve already started mentally planning your Interrail adventure. I don’t mean to ruin the fun, but it’s worth noting that there are a few safety precautions to keep in mind, particularly if you’re traveling alone. Keep your friends and family updated at all times, so they know which city you’re in at any given point. Don’t do anything you’re not comfortable doing, such as walking around at night in neighbourhoods you’ve never been in.

Also, keep your documents in a safe place and make sure your phone is always charged, in case you need to translate something or find your way. Finally, do your research in advance to guarantee that you’re aware of any cultural particularities.

Alright, you can go back to your route brainstorming now. Hopefully this blog post has inspired you to plan your ideal European summer trip with Interrail.
